Harassment and hate of any kind are strictly prohibited on Twitch. This includes offensive messages, hate attacks through raids, and malicious follows. Although the platform has done a lot to try and prevent these things from happening to its creators, some haters will still slip through the cracks.
To increase safety for creators, Twitch has implemented a new verified chat option. Let’s talk about it.
The Purpose of Verified Chats
In order to help their creators fight against harassment, Twitch has announced that it will be adding phone verification chat controls on top of the existing email verification settings. This means that you can filter your chat to only be available for verified accounts.
Because of this addition, people won’t be able to create troll accounts just willy-nilly. Creators are able to set a phone or email verification requirement for accounts that are of certain following lengths or even ages.
For example, as a streamer, you can filter your chat so that an account that’s been following you for less than a week or is less than a week old, won’t be able to type in the chat without a verified phone number.
Exemptions
Creators can exempt certain kinds of viewers from verified chats. For example, you can exclude subscribers, mods, or VIPs. The main goal is to try and cut down hate raid incidents and other hate attacks on Twitch streamers.
Restrict Ban Evasion
Users can have up to five accounts linked to a single phone number. However, if one of your linked accounts gets suspended, all the other accounts that are also linked to the number will be suspended, and you won’t be able to verify additional accounts using that same number.
How to Enable Verified Chats on Your Twitch Channel
If you want to enable verified chats, follow these steps:
- Go to Twitch and log into your account.

Click on your profile picture and select Creator Dashboard.

On the left of the screen, go to Settings > Moderation.
- Scroll down until you get to Channel Privileges, where you can modify the Chat Verification settings.
Filter Out the Haters
Considering that many Twitch creators, especially those who are popular, get a lot of hate every time they stream, this was a necessary addition. By implementing the ability to limit your chat to verified accounts, you can further protect yourself from online harassment and hate.
