Nextdoor Rolls Out “Anti-Racism” Notifications

Social

Nextdoor is taking the extra step to prevent racist remarks from appearing on the platform. The neighborhood-based social network will now warn you when you try to post content that may be racist.

The Anti-Racist Notification Detects Offensive Language

Nextdoor announced the launch of anti-racism notifications in a post on the Nextdoor Blog, with the purpose of preventing “language that could be offensive or hurtful to people of all backgrounds.”

For example, the platform will detect particular phrases, such as “All Lives Matter” or “Blue Lives Matter.” It will then display a notification that warns the user that the phrase “can be hurtful to people of color,” and asks them to revise their comment before posting it.

Nextdoor still allows users to publish their comment regardless of editing it, so it doesn’t block racist content completely. It may deter users from making harmful comments, but it likely won’t solve the issue completely.

Nextdoor previously launched a Kindness Reminder in 2019, a similar feature that prompts users to reconsider comments with hurtful language.

Nextdoor Hopes to Build Better Neighborhoods

Nextdoor hopes that by encouraging inclusiveness and kindness on its platform, those same values will be reflected in actual neighborhoods. It may be a stretch, but the notification may make people rethink saying harmful things, both in-person and online.
