How to Link (and Unlink) Instagram to Facebook

Social

Many social media users have both Facebook and Instagram, and it can be fun to link your Facebook and Instagram accounts together and post the same photo on both accounts. Double the platforms, double the likes and exposure.

But sometimes, you’ll only want your photos to appear on one platform or the other. So, how do you do that?

Here’s how to link and unlink your Instagram and Facebook accounts, and how to share any Facebook post on your account onto Instagram and vice versa.

  1. On your Instagram homepage, go to your profile by tapping the icon at the bottom right screen.
  2. Once you are on your profile, tap the three horizontal lines on the top right corner.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Select Account. Scroll and select Sharing to other apps.
  5. You will see a list of apps which you can select and link your Instagram account with. Select Facebook.
  6. You will then be asked to enter your Facebook login information, including your email and password.

Both your accounts are now linked. Congratulations—you will now gain bigger exposure for your social media posts, and increased engagement between you and your network of friends. Many businesses link their Facebook and Instagram accounts for precisely this reason.

In fact, little things like this is actually all part of social media marketing, which is now the mainstream way of curating a shiny business brand.

Although your accounts are linked, you will still have the option to toggle a photo’s sharing settings before the next time you post a photo or a story on Instagram.

Feeling like you are oversharing your life on Facebook and Instagram? Don’t worry, you can always unlink both accounts and enjoy some degree of privacy.

The steps for unlinking your accounts are a little bit different to linking them. A while ago Facebook introduced Accounts Center, which is a place where users can manage their connected Instagram, Facebook, and Facebook Messenger accounts in a single place.

To unlink your Instagram from Facebook, you will need to go on Accounts Center. Here’s how to do it.

  1. On your Instagram homepage, go to your profile by tapping the icon at the bottom right screen.
  2. Once you are on your profile, tap the three horizontal lines on the top right corner.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Scroll down and select Accounts Center in blue fonts.
  5. You will see the accounts and profiles that are linked to one another above Manage Connected Experiences. Tap on the profiles.
  6. Select the Facebook profile, then select Remove from Accounts Center in red fonts.

Once you have unlinked your account, posts made on Instagram can no longer be shared on Facebook.

How to Share Facebook Posts to Instagram (and Vice Versa)

It’s not just photos that are able to make rounds on both platforms. Did you know that you could also share your Facebook posts on Instagram, and vice versa? However, the catch is that this function is only available for business pages.

So, if you run a business page on Facebook and would like to learn how to cross-post onto Instagram, you have to first connect your business page to your Instagram business account, and this can only be done via desktop.

Just follow the steps below.

  1. Log onto your business page on Facebook.
  2. Navigate to Settings at the bottom left corner.
  3. Scroll down and select Instagram.
  4. Select Connect Account.

You will then be asked to enter the login information for your Instagram business page.

After entering the relevant information, both your accounts will now be connected to one another. Once this has happened, you can try cross-posting from Facebook with your business page to make sure everything works.

  1. Create a new post.
  2. Before sharing it, you should be able to see the new Instagram option under News Feed.
  3. Tick the option.
  4. Finally, click Share Now.

Keep in mind, though, that there are several limitations to this function. First, you can only cross-post onto Instagram if your post contains an image. This means that if your Facebook post is just a wall of text, you will not have the option to share it onto Instagram.

Next, this function only works for brand new posts, which means that you won’t be able to re-share an old post from your business page onto Instagram.

Doing the reverse and sharing an Instagram business post onto your Facebook business page follows a similar process. You have to also make sure that both business accounts are connected before posting.

Here’s how to do it.

  1. On your Instagram business homepage, go to your profile by tapping the icon at the bottom right screen.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Account. Scroll and select Sharing to other apps.
  4. You will be presented with a list of apps which you can select and link your Instagram account with. Select Facebook.

According to Instagram’s official Help site, your Instagram account will be linked with your personal Facebook account by default.

However, in some circumstances, you will have the option to create a new Facebook page or connect to an existing one. You can see an example of what this looks like in the image above.

Now, every time before posting, make sure you select Share To and pick the page you manage.

Before you can do any of the above, keep in mind that you need to be an admin of a Facebook page.

Linking Your Instagram and Facebook Is Easy

Linking your Instagram and Facebook accounts is a great way to increase your social media presence on both platforms.

For small business owners, this method increases visibility and authority. And more eyeballs on your brand’s social media pages is a sure-fire way to gain more clients.

So if you run a Facebook page on top of your personal account, why not try linking it to Instagram and see if you’ll gain more exposure online?
